Powerlifting
Powerlifting is a test of maximal strength in three barbell lifts: the Bench Press, the Squat, and the Deadlift. Aside from competition, these three, multi-joint, or compound exercises provide a superior foundation for other sports and for general health.
Squat
Squatting involves placing a loaded barbell across the upper back and descending until the hip joints are at least parallel with the knee joints before returning to an upright position by pushing the weight away from the floor. The Squat is known as the king of lower body exercises but because it engages nearly every muscle in the body it is also excellent for developing mobility and core strength.
Bench Press
The Bench Press involves pressing or pushing a loaded barbell away from the upper chest until elbows are fully locked out. A wide oblique overhand grip is used whilst lying supine on a flat bench. The exercise tests upper body strength, targeting the lower chest muscles while engaging the muscles of the shoulders, arms, upper chest, and back.
Deadlift
The Deadlift requires a loaded barbell to be lifted or pulled from the floor to waist height in what is the most rudimentary test of strength. Primal and extremely useful, deadlifting builds strength throughout the body but especially in the back and hamstrings. Like the squat, the deadlift is an excellent exercise for developing core strength.
